Mitre Saw Tool Chest |

I have always wanted to build a tool chest with drawers that would not allow me to stack tools on top of each other. So this year when I added on to my shop, I decided to scrap my old mitre station and incorporate a tool chest. This Mitre Station is 96 x 24 x 30 and because I plan on moving it into the addition I mounted it on heavy duty casters. I wanted easy cleaning around it so I did not build it with a toe space and the casters are not locking. I allowed a half inch clearance to the floor for any deviation in the concrete. Once I have it set up, a couple screws in the back will secure it in place. This saw is dedicated for use in cutting square and no bevel, face frame parts, drawer parts, etc..
You must remember every mitre saw has different dust removal characteristics, so after about twenty mock-ups, these first two are the design I finally settled on. This dust removal was designed for this Dewalt saw. It may not work on a different type. It works extremely well with little or no blow by. I used four inch duct with an external blast gate.
The support section was made a 1/4" lower than the bed of the saw for shimming purposes. Because it is a dedicated unit I was able to make a zero clearance insert and fence. If you do a lot of trim work with your saw and no bevel work, the insert is well worth the time to make. It makes super clean cuts. The zero clearance fence will not work for mitres.
The glides I used are KV 8400s full extension The drawers are 30 x 18 x 3 and made of 1/2 Birch plywood. For the drawer pulls I didn't want anything that would catch on my legs as I worked with the saw, so I used 1/2" twisted poly rope. To fasten the handle, just let the rope extend about 3/8" into the drawer, and with a torch heat an old putty knife and melt the end of the rope.
I ran the duct on the left, I know where this is going to go in the new part. The fence for the cabinet is 2 x 2 square aluminum tubing left over from a screened porch. A simple cam clamp works well for a stop.
The dust collection is just great this way, but, but, do not try it without turning the DC on, it will all come right back in your face!
